Our Roots

Smith Brothers Builders Limited is woven into the fabric of Beith. Founded in 1923 by brothers James and David Smith, our story is one of family dedication, exceptional craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to the communities we serve.

The second generation saw cousins John Boyd Smith and Robert Smith begin their apprenticeships in 1925, aged just 14. Both men served their country during the Second World War before returning to take over as partners in 1946, bringing high professionalism and integrity to every aspect of the business. John Boyd Smith, fondly known as JBS, became a greatly respected figure in Beith, not only for his business acumen but for his lifelong commitment to 1st Beith Boys Brigade, serving as Captain from 1937 to 1977.

The third generation brought James Templeton Smith and his younger brothers Matthew and Ewan into the fold, active in the business from 1954 to 2011 when Matthew was the last to retire. Under their stewardship, Smith Brothers achieved British Standard 5750 Quality Assurance accreditation through NQA certification, demonstrating their commitment to formalized quality management.

Today, the fourth generation continues this proud legacy. John Boyd Smith Junior and Colin James Boyd Smith joined the family business in 1979 and remain actively involved, maintaining ISO 9001:2015 accreditation for general building works, audited annually by National Quality Assurance since 1993. Four generations of the Smith family have upheld the same core values: quality workmanship, honest service and genuine care for every client we serve.

What makes Smith Brothers special is our deep connection to the community. Historically one of the few family businesses continuously operating in Beith, we place great emphasis on employing local people, a principle we’ve maintained since our founding. Our close ties with 1st Beith Boys Brigade ensured that many apprentices through the years were specifically chosen from company members, a point of principle insisted upon by JBS. This commitment to nurturing local talent and investing in the community through support of 1st Beith BB, Beith Juniors, Civic Week and St Inan’s Fete demonstrates that we’re more than just builders – we’re part of the fabric of Beith.

Our business activities remain rooted in the principles established a century ago. General building works for all trades and industrial maintenance work for building and joinery form our main line of work, supported by a healthy base of repeat customers and new contracts. Our services span general building upgrades and repairs, hard landscaping, house alterations and refurbishment works across all trades, house extensions as main contractor, brickwork and stonework walling, minor joinery works, minor roof repairs and industrial maintenance works for local business clients in engineering, pharmaceutical and commercial sectors.

Driven by quality, safety and environmental procedures, we’re committed to high professionalism and integrity in everything we do. Our ISO 9001:2015 accreditation reflects our dedication to delivering projects that meet and exceed customer expectations.

The satisfaction of our customers remains our finest advertisement and our primary goal – a philosophy that has guided Smith Brothers for over 100 years and will continue to guide us for generations to come.
